Create your own jukebox

Music jukebox
All you need to do is download an MP3 player from the Internet for free. You can then go to sites such as www.MP3.com, download a track and set about creating your own tailored album full of your favourite songs. The software also allows you to do things the other way round and convert your CD, mini-disk and tape recordings into MP3 files.

If you want to take a CD or wave file and turn it into an MP3, you will need an encoder. These applications take the sound data and compress it to a sound quality and file size of your choosing.
Standard quality encoding is done at a rate of 128 kilobits per second (kbps) – which is the amount of memory one second of music takes up. For higher quality sound – and bigger files of course – you can encode songs at 160 kbps, 192 kbps or even 256 kbps, which is true CD quality. But even at medium quality, you could store enough MP3 files to play music for a week without stopping in just 10 gigabytes of disk storage space.
Of course, it is important to stress that downloading copyrighted music or films without paying the appropriate copyright holder is illegal, so make sure you use recognised providers.
