Interview with Markus Sellmair

Head of System Development and Quality Consumer Mobile, AMILO notebooks

What do you do?

I head up system development for our AMILO notebooks and am responsible for taking our most exciting concepts through to production. Along the way, my team must meet stringent quality standards and hit aggressive timelines.
I see. How many of you are there?

There are 85 development engineers working on consumer products in Augsburg and Sömmerda, Germany. But we also engage closely with our corporate counterparts, so the total engineering team is actually far larger. We also have engineers working with our key manufacturing partners in Taiwan and China.

What’s your development philosophy?

We design products with our customers in mind, first and foremost. This requires us to think like the customer at every step along the way, whether its how things look, what they do or how they operate. In fact, we get a lot of input directly from our customers. This has resulted in sought-after features such as the silent mode button on our notebooks, which lowers noise and power consumption.

What’s your biggest challenge?

That’s easy. The biggest challenge is to consistently achieve industry-beating quality standards in a fast-paced marketplace where development cycles are getting shorter and shorter.

Right, spill the beans. What exciting products are in store?

There’s always something exciting in our labs; at the moment it’s the successor to our 17-inch notebook – but I won’t say anything more than that! Overall, a key focus for us is in creating products that meet the needs of different personality profiles. For example, developing notebooks for World Travellers, who demand ruggedness and connectivity wherever they go; or Supreme Gamers who require the very latest in screen, graphics and sound technology. Technology-wise, we are working hard to integrate wireless USB capabilities, new ‘hybrid’ solutions for smarter power management, and other technologies that will ensure total connectivity regardless of where you are.
