Interview with Stefan Klein

Senior Manager of Climatic, Mechanical and Acoustic Lab, Augsburg

What do you do?

I head up the Augsburg test laboratory where we perform acoustic, climatic and mechanical tests on Fujitsu Siemens Computers products. We also measure energy efficiency in order to meet tightening environmental standards. Also, we need to ensure each product meets the standards of every country it is sold in – and I can tell you there are a fair few!

Right. Tell us more about the test centre.

We are independently run from Fujitsu Siemens Computers and are therefore a service provider to the company. Our knowledge and our testing environment are accredited by independent organisations. This impartiality gives Fujitsu Siemens Computers the edge in confirming to – and often exceeding – strict industry standards.

Come on, how impartial are you? Really.

Well, computer magazines and other companies regularly use our facilities to test their products – so you be the judge!

What tests do you do?

A few examples are thermal tests that use special optical cameras to identify hot running spots in computers, and acoustical tests that cut down on the operational noise a notebook makes. I can tell you lots of money is invested in the testing process.

How do you see testing evolving in the future?

My dream is to fine-tune acoustics to the point we can offer a ‘sound design’ capability. This goes beyond just being able to create the most silent PC; it’s about the sound the PC and its peripherals should make in order to create a unique, fulfilling user experience. Ultimately it would be nice to have a sound that is common to all Fujitsu Siemens Computers products.
