 VDE Verlag is regarded in German-speaking countries as the most prestigious publisher in the field of electrical engineering and information technology. Its publications range from standards and specialized books to trade periodicals. VDE Verlag is located in Berlin and Offenbach. Customers of VDE Verlag, which employs a total of 75 people at the two locations, include bookstores, wholesalers and also private customers.

Ceyoniq Technology GmbH produces software for enterprise content management, document management and archiving. Ceyoniq's products and solutions, as integration systems, enable optimised connection to existing business applications. With 120 employees, Ceyoniq has offices in Bielefeld, Munich, Cologne and Berlin.
The Challenge
The VDE Verlag, a publishing house specializing in electrical engineering and information technology, produces many pages of reading material. Publication of these print media creates business administration processes that have grown considerably over the years: Some 22 million documents now have to be administered. To cope with this flood of documents, VDE Verlag was quick to make use of electronic archiving technology.
The business administration processes handled at VDE Verlag every day are many and varied. For instance, customer relationships have to be nurtured, incoming orders and invoices recorded and processed, and authors' fees settled. The company's goal was for the responsible employees to be able to utilize and tap into this steadily growing wealth of information quickly, and as and when required.
VDE Verlag used an electronic archiving and document management system to ensure the important task of being able to supply information readily, both internally and externally. This solution, consisting of several hardware and software components, had done a good job since being introduced, but recently started to show signs of aging and was limited in its capacity a security risk long-term, given the fact that the current volume of data has risen to some 22 million documents plus index data. The lion's share of this mountain (95%) is made up of electronically created documents. The remaining 5% are scanned documents received by postal mail.
VDE Verlag wanted a leading-edge, futureproof solution that would also meet medium-term needs and offered the familiar functionalities 1:1. And one that was also able to migrate the immense quantity of documents securely to the new system era, offered the very highest storage capacity and ran under the operating system Microsoft® Windows 2003 Server. As the project partner, the customer chose Ceyoniq Technology GmbH, a renowned vendor of software for enterprise content management (ECM), document management and archiving.
The Solution
Ceyoniq developed an end-to-end solution tailored to the customer's needs. It combines its own Ceyoniq nscale Value Edition perfectly with PRIMERGY TX300R servers from Fujitsu Siemens Computers.
Other integrated modules include an Oracle database and a 700 GB optical jukebox. The latest technology, expandability of the overall system and the impressive price/performance ratio spoke in favor of these components. Some 35 users at VDE Verlag are now benefiting from the refreshed infrastructure every day, particularly from the far shorter response times and the resulting efficiency with which they are able to retrieve information.
The PRIMERGY servers with their dual Intel® Xeon processors are the ideal platform for large capacity requirements; they also improve data transfer rates. The broad performance range of the ECM system can be leveraged securely thanks to built-in high availability.
Employees at the publishing house can use electronic archiving and document management conveniently thanks to an intuitive front-end. The possibility of creating any desired views of different document structures, such as virtual files for customer information, is extremely advantageous. And the end-to-end solution also addresses data security concerns: Long-term availability is ensured by audit-proof archiving.
