High availability & disaster tolerance

The HIPLEX failover cluster edge

Around-the-clock availability has become an absolute must, since downtime can cost millions per hour. Because the failure of business critical applications can threaten a company’s existence, losing networks or data access is not an option. The answer: network, server and data redundancy together with mechanisms that use this redundancy to circumvent local failures.
Availability of 99.999 percent can be achieved through the combination of highly reliable hardware and software, BS2000/OSD functions and the HIPLEX failover cluster. In a HIPLEX (or Highly Integrated System Complex) in which cluster servers are linked via high-performance and failsafe global storage, the global storage itself can be exclusively assigned to real or virtual systems and utilized for joint access by several systems to common data sets. Up to four real and 15 virtual systems can simultaneously access global storage data. Furthermore, global storage signaling functions can be used for extremely fast communication between several systems.
A wealth of advantage
With its HIPLEX concept, Fujitsu Siemens Computers offers top availability as well as practically unlimited scalability, currently well over 10,000 RPF (relative performance factor) and rising. HIPLEX also ensures optimum resource utilization and the straightforward administration of all BS2000/OSD servers.

High availability offers a safeguard against the failure of individual components (failure tolerance), while disaster tolerance serves to cover additional risks by enabling a site to resume production following the partial or complete destruction of data center infrastructure. In this case, it is assumed that current data from all applications at the production site was destroyed. The redundant data and resources required to restart productive operation thus are kept physically separate (e.g. at a stand-by data center).

The primary building blocks for customer-specific disaster tolerance solutions are systems for data mirroring over long distances (SYMMETRIX Remote Data Facility) and HIPLEX concepts for monitoring productive applications and automating their failover to backup systems. The range of solutions covers all possible requirements, including the continuation of vital business applications following a disaster with almost no delay and the most recent data.
