| | HIPLEX (BS2000/OSD) |
Highly Integrated System Complex |
HIPLEX stands for Highly Integrated System Complex and is Fujitsu Siemens Computers' concept for supporting an availabiltiy- and load sharing cluster consisting of several BS2000/OSD Business Servers. We call each multi-server configuration having the attributes of one of the above mentioned cluster types a HIPLEX too.
A HIPLEX consists of several uni- or multiprocessors, which are linked together by a network. Each one of these processor systems has an operating system BS2000/OSD of its own or is running with VM2000. This construction of a HIPLEX offers a wider range of scalability and redundancy than a classical uni- or multiprocessor system with shared memory architecture (Symmetric Multiprocessor = SMP).
The products HIPLEX AF and HIPLEX MSCF enables applications to be implemented with highest possible availability as part of a multiserver concept:- If one system fails, the applications monitored by HIPLEX AF are automatically switched to an intact second system (Hot-Standby) together with their resources. Downtime is minimized by an automatic failure detection facility and by the fact that a system restart is not required and therefore does not influence application availability. An option is the choice of a Warm-Standby Configuration, where the failed system is automatically restarted on a second server.
- In addition to managing a system failure, HIPLEX AF can increase availability after an application failure and provide the basis for a load sharing cluster in which specific applications can be relocated with the aid of HIPLEX AF to another server.
- In case of a catastrophy, i.e. a local crash of both the server(s) and the (mirrored) storage subsystem at a site, HIPLEX AF autonomously switches over to a remote data centre (failover) without suffering any data loss. Also support for transferring applications back to the recovered data center (failback) is offered at the push of a button.
