SPOOL system

Simultaneous Peripheral Operation On Line

SPOOL is a BS2000/OSD-BC subsystem. It organizes the usage of printers and also, in certain instances, magnetic tape devices. SPOOL is used to read in job descriptions (SPOOLIN) and to output the results (SPOOLOUT). SPOOL supports a broad spectrum of hardware for spoolout, for example line printers, laser printers, LED printers and virtual printers and magnetic tape devices.

For output, the temporal link between provision of the data and the actual output of the data to a device is broken. Spooled-in user jobs and output jobs in progress are saved beyond the end of a system run and can be processed in the next session.

The configuration of devices operated via SPOOL can be changed. The assignment of special usage modes (e.g. printers for special character sets or types of paper) can be changed dynamically and is taken into account when jobs are processed. The SNS (SPOOL Notification Service) subsystem supports the transmission (by e-mail) and administration of notifications concerning print jobs and printers.

SPOOL consists of the following parts:
  • the synchronous part used for processing commands and macros

  • the asynchronous part used for internal control of SPOOL and job processing.

Parameter files and print resources
Information about the current SPOOL configuration, i.e. the names and settings of the available devices, paper formats, character sets etc., is stored in various parameter files.

Systems support can use commands or utility routines to supplement or modify them.
Printing resources are accessed using the PRM subsystem.
SPOOL can be extended by additional functions. To do this, the following subsystems must be implemented.
  • RSO for output to remote printers

  • Dprint for distributed printing within a computer network

  • SPS for the implementation of APA printers

  • SPCONV for the use of converters
