System Managed Storage

System Managed Storage (SMS) on BS2000/OSD is not a single product, but a comprehensive concept for data and storage management.by the operating system instead of by the user (self-optimizing data management). It is based on the principle of separate logical and physical views of the data.

SMS enables the storage administrator to define a hierarchical storage system, consisting of an on-line processing level as well as a background level for data migration by means of the Public Volume Set (pubset) concept.

SMS makes a major contribution to the availability and automation of system operation. Key aspects are the transparency of the storage hierarchy for the end user and the simplification of data management activities for the system administrator. The user formulates a logical description of the structural, availability and performance requirements of his file. Optimum storage of the data within the pubset is handled automatically by the system.

SMS supports operation of an Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) system aimed at providing the right information at the right time and at the right place at minimum cost. ILM is a storage management concept that actively controls and administers information objects over their entire lifecycle. An optimization process embedded in a control system determines the most suitable place to store the information.

The backup, replication, export, relocation and archiving functions required for ILM are available in System Managed Storage. They are realized through the product HSMS.

Data administration is performed centrally. This enables volume configuration, distribution of files to volumes, and data administration procedures to be changed without the need for users to make any changes. The System Managed pubsets (SM pubsets) are self-contained switchover units of the entire storage hierarchy. Dynamic pubset reconfiguration increases availability and enhances the flexibility of data center operation.

System Managed Storage was introduced with BS2000/OSD-BC V3.0 and acquires wider and deeper significance as hardware configurations get steadily bigger.
The focus of the further development of System Managed Storage in BS2000/OSD-BC V7.0 will be on support for data growth and data and backup management on the lines of Information Lifecycle Management (ILM).
