Personnel cost savings and headcount realignment
Savings on fixed assets and personnel costs have enabled
us to stabilize our results significantly in recent months
and we will continue to focus on increasing our competitiveness
in processes, structures and resources alike.
A substantial personal contribution from our employees
In light of the economic situation and the sluggish market,
we have realized a program aimed at lowering personnel
costs. The decision to introduce such a program was not
an easy one, but was nonetheless important to ensure the
success of the company in the long-term. Our employees
contributed considerably to the effectiveness of our cost-cutting
measures for which we would like to express our appreciation.
Their co-operation in sacrificing vacation time, bonuses
or jubilee payments and working fewer hours resulted in
savings of over € 20 million, mitigating the headcount
reduction.
Improving efficiencies and productivity
Fujitsu Siemens Computers has invested in customer-facing
skills such as our large enterprise sales force, Professional
Services and Channel Development. This investment notwithstanding,
the non-recovering market affected headcount. Back-office
functions were reduced on the strength of process improvements
and consolidation aimed at minimizing overlaps and improving
efficiencies.
The outcome was a total headcount reduction of 394 in
fiscal 2002/2003. Our objective is, and has been, to increase
efficiencies wherever possible; this is an on-going process.
Over the next six months our overall headcount will be
decreased by an additional 200. In spite of these reductions,
employee productivity has in fact risen and we have established
a better geographic balance between Germany, where reductions
were proportionally higher, and the other European countries.
