Economy and the IT sector
Global economic development is difficult to predict at
this stage, but recovery is expected to be slow. The IT
sector has gone through the largest downturn in its history
and even after it recovers, the industry will never be
the same. According to IDC, the market in Western Europe
will decline by another 5% in 2003*, and growth rates
are likely to stay in the low- to mid-single digits for
years beyond that. As it moves towards maturity, the IT
industry is undergoing fundamental structural change and
will also become much more vulnerable to business cycles.
Nevertheless, we are convinced that the IT sector will
remain a driving force for the economy and for society.
Information and communication technologies are enabling
an "always on" culture and blurring the boundaries
between "work" and "leisure". In a
world where we live longer, are more mobile, and where
life-long learning becomes essential, they will help us
to master the many challenges still ahead.
The year ahead
In the coming fiscal year, we aim to increase both revenues
and profitability; an ambitious target. The pillars of
our strategic direction, Mobility and Business Critical
Computing, have proven their worth in the last two years
and we will continue to drive strategy implementation
in these areas.
Furthermore, we plan to gain market share in all countries
and regions. To this end, we are targeting growth with
both large enterprise customers and SME customers. By
continuing to invest in our SME business model and the
business processes and programs we have deployed with
our channel partners, we are in a good position to enhance
business and win market share.
We will complete the realignment of our cost structure
and are implementing several projects designed to improve
key business processes. Together, these measures will
support further improvement of our operating profitability.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers will continue to listen carefully
to its customers and to respond to their requirements
with a comprehensive product portfolio of innovative,
integrative and flexible IT products and infrastructure
solutions.
